As a brand identity designer, I want to be clear with my clients about what I do (and also what no designer can do for you)A brand is the perception of a company.
Your brand is what people think of when they think about your company. It’s your reputation. It’s influenced by your values, your products, your marketing, your customer service. It’s shaped by magazine articles about you, how your stores smell inside, and what your neighbour’s mom said about you at the grocery store. And yes, it includes your logo, website, and business cards.
* Logo: Its placement, variations for different platforms and channels, colours, size and proportions
* Colors: Primary and secondary colors as well its monochrome version
* Fonts: Corporate typography that are used in headlines and bodies of text in official documents
* Photography: Its style and guidelines used for consistent presentation
* Brandmark: Where to use it
* Other: Patterns, textures, graphics, icons
* Tone of voice: professional, logical, emotional, humorous etc.
* Social media assets: posting types, social media banners.
Why are brand guidelines important?

Think of your brand identity as your company’s personality. It’s how the world recognizes you and begins to trust you. If you see someone change how they look and act all the time, you won’t feel like you know who they are, and you certainly wouldn’t trust them.

Imagine a co-worker who always wears a dress shirt tucked into slacks, with his hair cut neatly short. Now imagine if that same person walked into work one day unshaven, wearing cutoff jeans and sporting a new tattoo of a tiger riding a motorcycle through flames. It’d probably feel uncomfortable because it’s not what you’re used to. You might even check in with him to make sure everything was okay.
The same logic applies to brands: inconsistency will confuse and alienate your customers. A style guide is essential because it helps your business communicate consistently across all teams and channels.
